On Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security announced that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the Mexican boxer, was apprehended by U.S. immigration officials and is set for expedited removal from the country. The DHS noted that Chavez, a Mexican citizen, is wanted in Mexico due to allegations of his participation in organized crime, specifically involving the trafficking of both explosives and firearms. Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary of DHS, remarked, “Under President Trump, no one is above the law – including world-famous athletes.” Chavez Jr., 39, is the son of renowned three-division champion Julio Cesar Chavez. He embarked on his boxing career at 17, beginning in 2003 in Culiacan, Sinaloa. Notably, after a 15-month stint as WBC middleweight champion, he lost his title to Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez in 2012. Throughout his career, Chavez Jr. has faced numerous legal challenges, including several suspensions for doping violations and financial penalties. His professional record includes 54 wins, 34 by knockout, 6 losses, and 1 draw. Most recently, he suffered a defeat to Jake Paul.
