Unearthing History: VCU's Archaeological Endeavor to Preserve Black Cemetery Grave Markers in Richmond

The Virtual Curation Lab at Virginia Commonwealth University is embarking on a meaningful initiative to honor grave markers in historically Black cemeteries within Richmond, Virginia. Directed by Bernard Means, the lab excels in creating 3D scans of significant objects. Collaborating with the Richmond Cemetery Collaboratory, they are meticulously documenting grave markers in Woodland Cemetery, the final resting place for approximately 30,000 Black residents. This essential preservation project not only connects descendants to their heritage but also places a spotlight on the area's overlooked history.
