(TriceEdneyWire.com) – In June of 1979, Dyana Williams, Kenny Gamble, and Ed Wright established Black Music Month, also recognized as African American Music Appreciation Month. The inaugural official celebration took place at the White House, hosted by President Jimmy Carter. His initiative laid the groundwork for recognizing and honoring the contributions of Black music, an effort continued by numerous Black music executives over the years. President Bill Clinton later issued a proclamation underscoring the significance of African American music to global culture, inviting Americans to explore and celebrate it. In 2009, President Barack Obama rebranded the month as African American Music Appreciation Month. His eloquent proclamation highlighted the profound connection between spirituals and freedom while acknowledging various Black music genres, from jazz to gospel. As we commemorate Black Music Month in 2025, we remember Sly Stone, the legendary frontman of Sly and the Family Stone, who recently passed. His music united generations, reminding us of love, acceptance, and togetherness.
