On Tuesday night, Colorado voters made a pivotal choice that could redefine school meals across the state by approving Propositions LL and MM. These measures finance free meals for all public K-12 students, funded through taxes on the state's wealthiest citizens. This courageous decision comes amidst the longest federal shutdown in U.S. history, illuminating the pressing issue of food insecurity, particularly among students. If similar initiatives gather momentum nationally, it could eliminate hunger and lunch debt for students unable to afford meals.Research underscores that free school meals enhance health and education outcomes, particularly for Black students, who disproportionately experience poverty. During the pandemic in 2020, about 66% of Black students accessed free meals, compared to 43% of their white counterparts. Furthermore, eliminating lunch debt—averaging $194 million nationally—can lessen financial burdens. In Colorado, new taxes on high earners will save families approximately $1,250 annually while supporting cafeteria staff and buying local food.
