Megan Piphus is an immensely skilled and versatile artist renowned for her multifaceted talents. Notably, she holds the distinction of being the first full-time Black woman puppeteer on “Sesame Street.” Recently, she released the children’s album “Cinderella Sweep,” featuring the popular single “A New Cinderella,” which has garnered significant attention. The album includes contributions from 53 young girls affiliated with the nonprofit organization “Saving Our Daughters,” which empowers adolescent girls of color through mentorship and artistic expression. This week, Piphus will showcase her talents during a live performance at the Black Music Museum on Saturday afternoon. Alongside her LP material, the event will reveal new artifacts dedicated to celebrating her career and legacy.
Piphus' artistic journey began at age 10 with ventriloquism, leading her to win three gold medals at the I-FEST by age 11. A valedictorian in 2010, she excelled at Vanderbilt and was crowned Miss Black Tennessee USA in 2013. She later emerged on television platforms, including “America’s Got Talent,” before officially joining “Sesame Street” in 2020. Her performance at the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) starts at noon on Saturday. For ticket details or upcoming events, visit info@nmaam.org or call (615) 301-8724.
