California Governor Pledges Redistricting Efforts to Conclude Trump’s Political Legacy

California Governor Gavin Newsom has committed to crafting new congressional maps designed to assist Democrats in their goal to “regain the House” and “terminate the Trump presidency,” particularly in response to gerrymandering initiatives in Texas endorsed by the former president. Utilizing X, previously known as Twitter, Newsom targeted Trump, parodying the president's signature capitalized social media style. He stated, “DONALD ‘TACO’ TRUMP … ‘MISSED’ THE DEADLINE!!! CALIFORNIA WILL NOW DRAW NEW, MORE ‘BEAUTIFUL MAPS,’ THEY WILL BE HISTORIC AS THEY WILL END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY (DEMS TAKE BACK THE HOUSE!).” His remarks coincided with attempts by Texas Republicans, backed by Trump, to manipulate district lines, which would potentially secure five additional House seats for the GOP. Newsom cautioned that should “red states” continue their maneuvers, California would respond in kind. A representative indicated that proposals for California's new maps are anticipated by August 15, 2025.
