(The HUB) – The chess initiative within Dallas ISD stands out as one of the most embraced programs, with an impressive 6,000 students engaging across 200 educational institutions. In response to the surging interest in chess, the Student Activities Department organized 10 competitive tournaments this year. Michelle Read, the student activity coordinator, noted a remarkable doubling of involvement from students in kindergarten through second grade, following its introduction to the district last year. “This clearly reflects an increasing enthusiasm for chess among our youngest learners,” she mentioned. “It’s fascinating to observe these young competitors testing their limits and enjoying our district-wide events.” Jose Delgado, a Dallas ISD educator and parent, highlighted the positive impact of the chess program at his daughter’s school. He remarked how playing since second grade fostered her sense of community and critical thinking skills. On tournament days, various campuses are bustling with chessboards and eager participants. Medals are awarded to top performers, and schools receive trophies based on overall scores, enhancing school pride.
