As a Black man and baby boomer, I find myself increasingly concerned about the younger generations of color in our society. My cohort has had the unique privilege of witnessing significant social and political transformations over the last fifty years. This experience fosters an understanding of the progress made in achieving economic and professional opportunities previously unavailable. The elders of my youth recognized and embraced the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” thus underlining the crucial role of community support in nurturing youth and influencing societal advancements. The triumphs of my generation are fundamentally rooted in the advocacy of those who came before us. Today, as racial discrimination resurges and systems of support diminish, young individuals might not recognize the implications these social regressions have on their futures. The recent firing of Gen. C.Q. Brown, praised for his military achievements, reflects this troubling trend. Young people must connect these dots to understand the prevailing anti-Black sentiments and fortify aspirations for a more equitable future.
