Stone Mountain Park in DeKalb County, Georgia, is the site of America’s largest Confederate monument, and a particular group is determined to preserve it indefinitely. Stone Mountain, located about 30 minutes from Atlanta, attracts numerous visitors annually, offering family activities and stunning mountain views. However, as visitors ascend, they encounter the vast 190-foot-long Confederate Memorial, which features depictions of notable Confederate figures, including President Jefferson Davis and General Robert E. Lee.
The Georgia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans has recently filed a lawsuit against state officials, alleging the plans for a slavery exhibit violate the law. Their complaint arises in reaction to a previous agreement by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association to remove Confederate flags. The proposed exhibit aims to provide historical context regarding the monument’s controversial legacy, but the Confederate group insists it undermines the original intent of the park’s establishment.
