The HUB – Recently, the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Dallas ISD launched its inaugural district-wide summer arts intensive, inviting high school students to deeply engage in a selected artistic discipline over a week filled with creative exploration. Participants collaborated in small groups, honing their skills within a studio-like setting. They could choose from jewelry design, sculpture, digital artistry, printmaking, painting, or drawing. “It’s vital for students to advance their creative skills beyond the classroom, allowing them to discover their artistic voice,” remarked Kristin McCloskey, the project's manager. For several local students, this summer intensive was more than just acquiring new techniques; it provided a nurturing space for artistic growth among peers who share similar creative aspirations. Stephen J., a sophomore from New Tech High School at B.F. Darrell, utilized his animation background to sculpt a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles character. Meanwhile, Naomi H., a junior at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, crafted intricate jewelry pieces from wax, refining them into shiny forms.
