A troubling war has been declared on our youth.Funding for vital epidemic protections has been significantly reduced at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services. Higher education institutions face uncertainty as cuts to National Institutes of Health funding threaten their survival and workforce stability. Simultaneously, the U.S. Department of Education is eroding public schools’ ability to cultivate a diverse teaching workforce that reflects our nation’s variety.The most recent and heartless assault is the decision to dismantle a nearly 60-year-old federal initiative: Job Corps.Established in 1964 during President Johnson’s War on Poverty, Job Corps has empowered over two million young individuals aged 16-24. This program provides free education, vocational training, housing, meals, counseling, and job placement assistance. Long a symbol of hope for disconnected youth, Job Corps offered opportunity, dignity, and direction.Sadly, that light is now dimming.Recently, the Trump administration mandated the Department of Labor to cease new enrollments and initiate closures of Job Corps centers nationwide. This abrupt decision is catastrophic.
