Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” poses significant challenges for Black women, particularly by curtailing reproductive healthcare, maternal support, and access to essential assistance programs like WIC and SNAP. My daughter entered the world prematurely, forcing us to endure four months in a neonatal intensive care unit at one of America's premier children's hospitals. Each day, I anxiously observed her survival, my heart weighed down by uncertainty as I healed from the trauma of her birth. My husband and I held good jobs with private insurance, yet our medical expenses escalated into the hundreds of thousands. Thankfully, Medicaid came to our rescue, filling the gaps left by our insurance and allowing me to regain my strength. It enabled us to benefit from WIC, providing necessary nutrition during difficult times. Without public assistance, financial ruin would have loomed. The “Big Beautiful Bill,” enacted on July 3, 2025, threatens to dismantle such crucial support by slashing Medicaid while rewarding corporations with substantial tax breaks.
