(CNN) – The newest Barbie captivates in a stylish blue polka-dot crop top, a flouncy miniskirt, chunky heels, and an insulin pump. This doll marks a significant milestone as Mattel's inaugural representation for individuals with type 1 diabetes. Collaborating with Breakthrough T1D, previously known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mattel designed the doll to reflect approximately 304,000 children and teenagers in the United States managing this condition. The doll was unveiled on July 8 during the Breakthrough T1D Children’s Congress in Washington, an event that encourages young advocates to engage lawmakers, this year focusing on renewing funding for the Special Diabetes Program initiated in 1997. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder where the body attacks insulin-producing pancreatic cells, necessitating lifelong insulin management through injections or pumps. Mazreku, the director of marketing at Breakthrough T1D, helped ensure the doll authentically represents the type 1 diabetes community, a truly heartfelt initiative.
