Local authorities recently convened a press conference to address the surge of “disruptive juveniles” in downtown Winston-Salem. The Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) reported that large congregations of teenagers have engaged in fighting, vandalism, and other unruly behavior late into the night. Last weekend alone, six incident reports were filed, leading to four arrests, including one for assaulting an officer. During the conference, Chief William Penn urged parents to monitor their children, emphasizing the need for better supervision. To enhance safety, WSPD will collaborate with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office for increased patrols during graduations. Forsyth District Attorney Jim O’Neill hinted at possibly enforcing a curfew. Experts note that juvenile crime typically escalates in summer, urging a revisit of 2022 community strategies to tackle root causes effectively.
