NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Tennessee State University (TSU) is contemplating substantial staff reductions and limiting scholarship availability for incoming freshmen over the next five years, amounting to cuts of up to $13 million. Governor Bill Lee's recent budget did not provide adequate fiscal remedies for TSU’s challenges, which could necessitate legislative amendments. With a looming financial crisis, TSU officials proposed utilizing state-allocated capital funding to ameliorate the situation. Past budgetary discrepancies saw the legislature underfund TSU by $544 million compared to the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
Interim CFO Jim Grady emphasized the urgency of addressing the $90 million deficit. While Governor Lee's budget proposal remains at $69 million, consultation with the Tennessee Higher Education Commission revealed potential layoffs and program terminations. Despite existing scholarships for current students, incoming freshmen may only receive $31 million. The administration is also urged to adjust tuition amidst declining fiscal health. Future funding discussions may hinge on legislative mandates tied to fiscal performance.
