Black Christians Face a Defining Test: Will the Church Answer the Call?

The assassination of Charlie Kirk highlighted enduring divisions within Black churches. Following the event, numerous African American Christians took to social media to share their shock, indifference, or even support for the incident. The reactions unearthed surprising viewpoints among those believed to share similar beliefs, igniting spirited debates visible to all online.Historically, such discussions have been integral to the Black Church. C. Eric Lincoln and Lawrence H. Mamiya, in their seminal work “The Black Church in the African American Experience,” describe Black churches as existing along a spectrum of conflicting attributes.Some congregations prioritize spiritual readiness for the afterlife, while others engage more with societal and political issues. The death of Kirk merely crystallized these distinctions, revealing deeper questions regarding Black Christians' stance towards oppression and white supremacy.This is a pivotal moment for Black churches; silence risks exacerbating harm.
