“When they entered the city, they ascended to the upper room where they resided; namely, Peter, John, and others. United in purpose, they devoted themselves to continuous prayer, joined by women, Mary the mother of Jesus, and His brothers… “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all gathered in one location.” Acts 1:13a-14 and Acts 2:1. This month heralds the Christian season of Pentecost, signifying the church’s genesis. In Acts 1-2, we see the Holy Spirit descending upon a diverse assembly in the cherished “Upper Room.” Notably, Mary, the mother of John Mark, frequently overlooked, played a pivotal role as host during these extraordinary events. Scholars suggest this “Upper Room,” also where Jesus held the Passover meal (Luke 22:12), became a sanctuary. The Coptic Orthodox Church honors St. Mark as the founder, calling the “Upper Room” “Mary’s House.” Today, as we confront societal injustices and exclusion, the essence of “Mary’s House” resonates. We aspire to create inclusive spaces as exemplified by Jesus and the early Church. Join the movement at bread.org. Angel
