In late April, on a Sunday evening, various local nonprofit organizations dependent on AmeriCorps grants were informed that the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had abruptly rescinded approximately $400 million in federal AmeriCorps funding. This drastic measure resulted in the closure of around 1,000 community service programs and the deactivation of more than 30,000 AmeriCorps members. Established in 1993, AmeriCorps serves as the nation's federal volunteer service agency, with its largest division receiving Congress-approved funding of $557 million for 2025. The cuts sent shockwaves through the community. On June 5, U.S. District Judge Deborah L. Boardman issued a temporary injunction against these terminations in 24 states, including California. However, this ruling affects less than half of the AmeriCorps programs nationwide. As organizations scramble to adapt, many members like Marissa Britto have faced immediate job and income loss, forcing critical decisions amidst uncertainty.
