Since President Donald Trump officially abolished diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives at the federal level, businesses globally have been adapting to this paradigm shift. Stacey Abrams, former gubernatorial candidate and author, is urging corporations to reconsider their stance on completely eradicating DEI.
Abrams, known for her staunch opposition to MAGA during the 2018 and 2022 Georgia gubernatorial elections, cautioned companies to remain steadfast. Speaking at a New York University panel on July 11, she stated, “This idea that merely adhering to the rules halts at the water’s edge contradicts our historical narrative, incurring costs.”
Post-2016, companies like Disney, Ford, and Google have either rolled back or discarded their DEI policies, but Abrams insists this may yield short-term gains at a long-term price. She argues that billion-dollar entities should prioritize their customers over political pressures. Conversely, businesses like Costco, which uphold DEI, experience significant success, setting a benchmark for responsible corporate behavior.
