Psalms 78:4-5 Significant life events present an invaluable chance to reflect on the narratives of sorrow and joy embedded in our familial legacies. Recently, I delighted in such an occasion with my extended family, celebrating our bonds and shared heritage. During our gathering, it struck me how familial traits and the essence of our forebears resonated within us. We narrated accounts of the arduous choices faced by our ancestors amidst the violence of enslavement and oppressive sharecropping, as well as the distressing displacement of my Indigenous relatives by encroaching settlers. Despite these historical adversities, we convened to cherish our collective sustenance. As I ponder my heritage, I observe ongoing injustices that afflict marginalized groups today. The escalation of policing and militarization, particularly where I reside in Washington, D.C., raises grave concerns about recurring injustices against disproportionately targeted communities. Furthermore, I am alarmed by the increasing number of individuals suffering due to policies weaponizing food and reducing assistance for food-insecure families, which ultimately threatens living wages.
