In the wake of U.S. Rep John Lewis's passing on July 17, 2020, discussions emerged among the Minority Caucus of the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County Council, alongside community leaders, regarding a tribute to the eminent civil rights figure. After thorough deliberation, the consensus was reached to rename Fifth Avenue to Rep. John Lewis Way—honoring Lewis, who ignited his extensive fight for civil rights and civic justice during his scholarly pursuits at the American Baptist Theological Seminary and Fisk University. The Metro Council officially sanctioned the ordinance on November 5, 2020, establishing Rep. John Lewis Way from the intersection of Jefferson Street and Fifth Avenue, extending through downtown to the historic City Cemetery at Oak Street. To commemorate his enduring influence, the Annual Rep. John Lewis Way March is scheduled for Saturday, July 19, commencing at 8 AM. This procession will begin at the juncture of John Lewis Way and Jefferson Street, culminating with a short program at the National Museum of African American Music.
